MEN'S CAPTAIN

My name is Steve Bray and I have the honour of being Mens’ Captain of The Oaks Golf Club for 2023/24.

Having spent my working life in finance I am now happily retired and able to pursue my ambition of becoming a competent, rather than just enthusiastic, golfer. And The Oaks is the perfect place to do that – we have two excellent, challenging courses which are open 12 months of the year, fantastic practice facilities, two dedicated professionals who also look after Junior golf and those all-important lessons and a lively and comfortable bar bistro which is a great venue for those after-round post-mortems.

As well as a full calendar of competitions, both midweek and weekends, we have regular roll-ups where new and existing members can play, meet other members and obtain handicaps.

Foundation, a wonderful organisation that offers help and support to all with heart ailments through its extensive and world-beating research facilities. A series of fund-raising events culminating on Captains’ Day in September will be held during the year.

So, all in all we offer members, visitors and societies alike a warm welcome and look forward to sharing our friendly and welcoming club with you.

LADIES CAPTAIN

nina-pinkerton
My name is Nina Pinkerton and I became Oaks Lady Captain 2024/2025 in April.

I retired from the London Probation Service in 2012 and a friend of mine saw a poster in the Ladies area at The Oaks advertising a Ladies Golfing Academy.  I decided to go along with her to keep her company, not having any inkling of what lay in store for me, as ‘something to do’ and got hooked.  After languishing as a novice for three or four years, and making a lovely group of friends, I then progressed to playing regularly with the Ladies Section on the 18 hole course and haven’t looked back.

I started on a 40.6 handicap and haven’t progressed much from there but it’s the taking part that counts.  The introduction of the WHS [World Handicap System] has meant that a pretty high handicapper like me can play with other golfers on a lower handicap and still have an enjoyable game as the new system equalizes everyone and has a levelling effect.

I used to be a runner, a badminton player and a salsa dancer, but golf fits in with me now that I am no longer a spring chicken.  I have three sons and five grandsons and still work twice a week, and despite this and my nannying commitments, I can fit my golf into my ever changing lifestyle.  I’ve never been a couch potato and believe that getting out in the fresh air to play golf as much as I can, to meet up with like minded people and new friends, and to have a laugh as well as a challenge, is the best way to spend a day.

We have a very full competitions calendar in which one can win trophies, cups and monthly medals as well as fun games like the Waltz, 4 Clubs and a Putter, Royal Flush plus charity days like our Pink Invitational Day in June and our Captains Day in August, which this year means I am raising money for Breast Cancer Now, as well as Alzheimers UK, both charities dear to my heart and I am sure to yours too, as we all know friends and family who have been touched by these two terrible diseases.

We welcome lady golfers of all abilities and offer a full calendar of events throughout the year and this year we have a new Pro who is eager to set up a Ladies Academy and we hope that there will be more new members of the Ladies Section heading our way as a result.

The Ladies Section play Wednesday mornings, and on Monday mornings we have a Ladies Roll-up which is very popular and friendly and is non-competitive.   We also have another rollup on Sundays for those who want to play at weekends, if weekdays are not possible, and on a Tuesday morning one of our members, Julia Muncaster, has booked two tee-slots if anyone wishes to join her.

So come along and join us, remember life is for living, go out and grab it, and learn new challenges in the process.  Hope to see you on the course soon.  Either contact the pro shop and mention my name or contact me on 07742 102479 or email me on ninapinkerton@hotmail.com.

LADIES MEMBERS

Our monthly Women’s Section Newsletter features dates for all our forthcoming competitions for the month ahead, plus all the results from the previous month’s competitions, and details of any other news and events we would like you to be aware of.

Wednesday mornings are normally set aside for the Oaks Ladies to play whatever is featured on the Ladies calendar.   There is a friendly rollup that takes place on Mondays which is very popular.   We also have another friendly rollup on Sundays for those who want to play at weekends if weekdays are not possible.  Please take a look and see if there is any game that appeals to you.

I took up golf some 16 years ago when I retired from a 40+ year career in nursing. If anybody had said then that I would one day be captain I would have told them not to be ridiculous. However, here I am – not a great golfer by any stetch of the imagination but always enthusiastic and hoping the next game will be better.

At Oaks we welcome lady golfers of all abilities and offer a full calendar of events throughout the year – competitions and rollups twice a week, as well as friendly matches with neighbouring clubs.

Somebody once said that golf is the perfect sport for women – good exercise without getting sweaty and out of breath, an opportunity to shop and add to your wardrobe and a way to make new friends and chat. This is certainly the case at Oaks. My chosen charity is The Children’s Trust, Tadworth which is an amazing organisation caring for brain damaged children. I recently organised a very successful fund-raising Race Night and plan more events before my time as captain comes to an end.

and I became Oaks Lady Captain 2023/2024 in April.
